King of Spain visits Santo Domingo’s new Cathedral Museum

On 15 August 2024, King Felipe VI of Spain, accompanied by President Luis Abinader and other heads of government, toured the recently opened Santo Domingo Cathedral Museum. The heads of government had just participated in a welcome reception at the nearby Fortaleza Ozama that evening that preceded the 16 August 2024 inaugural of the second term of President Abinader.

The visit by the King of Spain underscored the enduring bond between Spain and the Dominican Republic and the historic and cultural ties between both countries.

The Cathedral Museum is located in the heart of the city’s colonial zone, across the street from the Santo Domingo Cathedral. It provides insights into the early days of European settlement in the Americas.

The museum’s exhibits delve into the lives of significant historical figures like Christopher Columbus, Queen Isabella, and Nicolás de Ovando, whose actions shaped the course of Dominican history. The presence of the King and regional heads of state highlighted the shared heritage of both nations and the importance of preserving their common past.

As Leoneor Asilis reported for Hoy, King Felipe VI expressed admiration for the museum’s exhibits and the dedication of those involved in its preservation.

The visit was seen as a significant moment for cultural diplomacy, strengthening ties between the two countries. The museum’s innovative approach to storytelling and its commitment to accessibility make it a valuable resource for both locals and tourists.

Operated by a dedicated volunteer team under the direction of Fabiola Herrera de Valdez, the Cathedral Museum represents a new model for museum management. By relying on ticket sales, donations, and special events, the museum has become increasingly self-sufficient.

King Felipe VI’s visit to the Santo Domingo Cathedral Museum serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of Spanish colonization in the Americas.

The museum is open Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.
