Dominican legislators barred from state contracts

Legislators Kinsberly Taveras, Selinée Méndez and Michelle Ortiz among suspended legislators / El Nacional

The Procurement Agency has suspended the procurement permissions to 22 legislators, included two senators and 20 deputies. The move is aimed at preventing conflicts of interest. The Procurement Law does not allow legislators to do business overtly with the state.

Likewise, Dominican lawmakers are also barred from contracting with the state for a period of six months following their departure from office.

While the measure is not considered a sanction, it aims to create a cooling-off period during which former legislators cannot engage in business dealings with government institutions.

The new regulation applies to the supply of goods, works, and services to government agencies.

On the list of suspended legislators is Kinsberly Taveras, who was President Luis Abinader’s first choice for Minister of Youth in 2020. Taveras, nevertheless, was removed from the position after investigative journalist Nuria Piera questioned that Taveras had deposited a wealth statement that showed she was a multimillionaire despite only having held municipal jobs in a small city government in her short career as a politician for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Taveras is married to Jheyson García, son of high-ranking PRM politician Josefa Castillo, who went from deputy to Superintendent of Insurance. Both are deputies for the same province of Santo Domingo.
