New border security commander: Jose Rodriguez Coste

On Tuesday, 20 August 2024, the Ministry of Defense (MIDE) officially transferred command to Brigadier General José H. Rodríguez Coste, who has been appointed as the new director of the Specialized Border Security Corps (CESFronT). He succeeds Brigadier General Freddy Rafael Soto Thormann.

Following the handover, General Soto Thormann expressed confidence in General Rodríguez Coste’s professional and moral qualifications to lead the institution responsible for border security. He also voiced his satisfaction with having worked alongside a dedicated team committed to protecting the
Dominican Republic.

Under General Soto Thormann’s leadership from mid-October 2023 to August, CESFronT seized approximately 10,626,900 cigarettes and around 185,512 bottles of alcoholic beverages that were being smuggled into the country from Haiti.

Another notable achievement of his tenure was the establishment of a new CESFronT headquarters in the National District, equipped with advanced technology to enhance border security.

General Soto Thormann has been assigned as the commander of the Second Brigade of the Dominican Republic Army, based in Santiago, overseeing the provinces of Bonao, La Vega, and Santiago de los Caballeros.

The Specialized Border Security Corps (CESFronT) is the division of the Ministry of Defense tasked with maintaining a specialized security and control system at formal entry and exit points along the Dominican-Haitian border. CESFronT is responsible for patrols and additional checkpoints in designated areas across the border zone and for coordinating with various agencies to ensure effective joint operations throughout the Dominican-Haitian border region. The Dominican Republic shares a border of almost 400 km long with Haiti.
