South Korea strengthens ties with Dominican Republic

The Korea Post reported on the visit to the Dominican Republic of former South Korean Presidential Chief of Staff Kim Dae-ki who came as a special envoy on behalf of Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to the second term inaugural of President Luis Abinader. The inaugural activities were scheduled on 15 and 16 August 2024.

Kim was in the Dominican Republic from 14 to 17 August with a full agenda. He attended the inaugural events but also held several bilateral meetings with key government officials.

As reported, Kim held a bilateral meeting with President Abinader on 15 August to convey President Yoon Suk Yeol’s congratulations and warm regards on his re-election.

The Korea Post reported that during the meeting President Abinader had highlighted the Dominican Republic’s strategic potential as a transportation and logistics hub in the region and expressed his desire for increased participation of South Korean companies in infrastructure projects, including railways, ports, airports, and power generation.

In response, Kim requested President Abinader’s continued interest and support for the expansion of South Korean businesses in the Dominican Republic, emphasizing their expertise and advanced technology.

In a bilateral meeting with Vice President Raquel Pena, Korea Post reported that Kim reviewed the achievements of Peña’s visit to South Korea in April 2023. They agreed on the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy and trade.

Kim also held bilateral meetings separately with Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez. In the separate meeting, Kim and Álvarez acknowledged the deepened practical cooperation between South Korea and the Dominican Republic since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962, founded on shared values of freedom and democracy. They also discussed ways to enhance cooperation on international platforms such as the United Nations.

Kim visited local South Korean businesses and held a meeting with South Korean entrepreneurs and expatriates. On the afternoon of August 15, Kim visited the local factory of LG Household & Health Care in a free trade zone near Santo Domingo, where he listened to the activities of the company and commended the efforts of its employees.

Before visiting the factory, Kim held a meeting with South Korean expatriates and business leaders in the Dominican Republic, expressing his gratitude for their role as a bridge in fostering cooperation between South Korea and the Dominican Republic and listening to their concerns.
