Thais Herrera tells her story of how she climbed Mount Everest for Diario Libre readers

Follow the story of Thais Herrera, the first Dominican woman to climb Mount Everest in the Tibet told in her own words. Diario Libre is publishing a 12-chapter account with insights into what the Dominican mountain climber was thinking and feeling during her journey, how she prepared, and what kept her going and safe.

An industrial engineer, Thais Herrera is only the third Dominican to climb Mount Everest (8,848m). The other two are Karim Mella and Ivan Gomez. Herrera explains she got into mountain climbing after the death of her husband Domingo Aristy from cancer. Motivated by Mella, she would first climb Pico Duarte in the Dominican Republic. She would go on to climb several of the world’s leading peaks before the Mount Everest climb.

Today she is the owner of Asertiva RD, a company that specializes in outdoor training and team building. She has also taught at the Barna Management School.
