US government imposes sanctions on former Haitian President Michel Martelly for drug trafficking

The US government has announced several sanctions against former Haitian President Michel Martelly, accusing him of playing a “significant” role in drug trafficking within the Caribbean nation.

According to a statement from the US Department of the Treasury, Martelly “abused his influence to facilitate the trafficking of dangerous drugs, including cocaine, destined for the United States.”

The statement also alleges that Martelly was involved in “money laundering of drug profits” and collaborated with local drug traffickers. Additionally, he is accused of sponsoring gangs based in Haiti.

The sanctions call for:
Prohibition on any transactions in foreign exchange that are subject to the jurisdiction of the United States and in which this target has any interest
Prohibition on any United States financial institution from making loans or providing credit to this target
Prohibition on any United States person from investing in or purchasing significant amounts of equity or debt instruments of this target
