The new director of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant), Milton Morrison has launched a comprehensive crackdown on traffic violations, imposing hefty fines on companies and individuals found in breach of transportation regulations
An Intrant press release tells that Intrant has slapped a RD$200,000 fine on two private transportation companies involved in a deadly bus collision on the notorious “Curve of Death” stretch of the Las Matas-Elías Piña highway. The crash claimed three lives and left several injured.
Intrant officials determined that both Asoprogchoco and Transporte Hermanos Paulino had allowed their drivers to operate without the necessary licenses, a clear violation of the country’s traffic law.
Intrant director Milton Morrison underscored the agency’s commitment to road safety, vowing to enforce traffic laws rigorously. “We will not tolerate any disregard for the rules of the road,” Morrison stated. “We will continue to educate drivers and impose strict penalties on those who put lives at risk.”
The press release also highlights other measures by the new director who took office in August. These are:
• Motorcycle taxi crackdown: Intrant has dismantled over 20 illegal motorcycle taxi stops across the National District, aiming to reduce the high rate of accidents involving these two-wheeled vehicles.
• Heavy vehicle enforcement: Authorities have seized 22 trucks caught transporting workers in violation of safety regulations. Several construction companies have also been fined for operating without the proper permits.
• Enhanced education and training: Intrant is mandating road safety courses for drivers involved in accidents and is working with transportation industry stakeholders to promote safe driving practices.
Likewise, as part of its ongoing efforts, Intrant has initiated a dialogue with heavy vehicle operators to ensure compliance with restrictions on certain roads. The agency aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in urban areas and create a safer transportation environment for all.
