Ouanaminthe market, Dajabon market

Santiago Riveron, the mayor of the municipality of Dajabón on the northern border with Haiti, said that he cannot guarantee the safety of Dominicans in Haiti if they decide to cross the border to the neighboring country to do business with Haitians, as reported in IciHaiti. In recent years, given the kidnappings, few Dominicans travel to Haiti.

On the other hand, Joanus Dufenede, the director of the Ouanaminthe Market that has been open for four weeks across the border from Dajabon, wants Dominican vendors to sell in Haiti.

As reported in IciHaiti, Dufenede says he guarantees the safety not only of Dominicans but also of Haitians who frequent the new place that was funded by the European Union.

Joanus Dufenede asks Dominican traders to report to the administration so that they could secure a space and thus sell their goods on Haitian territory “[…] we are ready to receive all Dominicans who come to sell in the Haitian part, just as we trade with Dominicans in the Dominican part.”

Joanus Dufenede said that he guarantees the safety not only of Dominicans, but also of Haitians who frequent the new place. “The security guarantee is for everyone and we have security cameras throughout the space, we have police officers, we have security from the city hall, we have agents who are there for security,” says Dufenede.
