DR1 Weather Report: Some rains, but no storms this week

Mike Fisher reports on the hurricane season, remarking that it has been good for him in Punta Cana and the country in general, so far… Indeed he observes, this is what he describes as “the quietest” season, or less active he remembers in the past 30 years he has lived here.

September is hurricane month for the Dominican Republic, and a major Category 5 storm can happen in 24 hours, as has been proven. So, there is the need to follow the weather and be prepared….

Mike Fisher gives his forecast on the two storms that are headed to the Caribbean Sea from African waters, and concludes neither will impact the Dominican Republic as they move past this week.

Disturbance #1 on the US National Hurricane Center – NHC charts is a low pressure area with some disturbed weather running mid highway. Fisher makes the point the system is not running in the most favorable environment, but it could become a tropical depression closer to the weekend. “Its tracking should keep it safely NE of the islands, no way it could enter the Caribbean, so at this point nothing to worry about, just to be watched,” he explains.

Disturbance #2 on the NHC charts is a few hundred miles behind #1, so it will track much more northwards and not come anywhere a danger distance to the Dominican Republic, he writes. He explains that the conditions on its path (WNW) are not that bad for some development, but he says there is wind shear and dry air involved, “so it may become a TD mid week ahead”. Moreso, he tells us what we like to hear: “Not coming our way, so no worries about this one.”

Nevertheless, the Weather Institute (Indomet) recommends people going out with umbrellas as the combination of a tropical wave and a trough could bring isolated thunderstorms, gusty winds and showers. Rains are particularly forecast for the northeastern, southeastern and central regions of the country. While the tropical wave and trough are the primary drivers of this week’s unsettled weather, Indomet is monitoring the disturbances in the Atlantic for any other potential development to become a tropical storm.
