There was a time when key micro-trafficking drug spots in the Dominican Republic were listed on Google so people using Google maps could find them easily.
The Abinader administration has done a turnaround and the Google drug points in Santo Domingo are no longer openly listed. Crackdowns on shipments have increased several many times. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently acknowledged speaking in a press conference on 6 September 2024. He pointed out that the present Abinader administration, from 2020 to 2023 had seized over 100 tons of narcotics, that is more than in the previous decade and a half. Blinken said the amount seized is indicative of the magnitude of the challenge, but also of the commitment to strengthen even more collaboration against international crime.
The intention now seems to tackle micro-trafficking. The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) and the National Police have intensified their joint efforts to combat the growing issue of micro-trafficking throughout the country.
In a recent meeting, Vice Admiral José M. Cabrera Ulloa, president of the DNCD, and Major General Ramón A. Guzmán Peralta, director of the National Police, discussed new strategies to effectively target, prosecute, and dismantle drug trafficking networks operating at the local level.
Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing operational capabilities and delivering decisive blows to these criminal organizations that plague neighborhoods and provinces across the nation.
“The National Police is firmly committed to supporting the DNCD in the fight against drug micro-trafficking,” stated Major General Guzmán Peralta. “We are ready to continue the battle against these criminal networks.”
Vice Admiral Cabrera Ulloa expressed his gratitude for the unprecedented support provided by the National Police, emphasizing that this collaboration has been instrumental in the government’s ongoing efforts to dismantle micro-trafficking rings.
“We sincerely appreciate the significant support of the National Police in our joint interdiction operations carried out nationwide, alongside the Public Ministry,” said Vice Admiral Cabrera Ulloa. “This aligns with our mission outlined in Drugs and Controlled Substances Law 50-88.”
In 2024 alone, the authorities have seized over seven million grams of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, crack, ecstasy, and other controlled substances as a result of these intensified joint operations.
