Motorcyclists banned from stopping in bus lanes, says Intrant

The National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant) has issued a ban on illegal motorcycle stops in bus lanes along major avenues such as José Núñez de Cáceres, Winston Churchill, and Charles de Gaulle in Greater Santo Domingo. The motorcyclists had been attracting passengers who otherwise would have been using the buses of transport companies that have been awarded exclusivity on the routes. The competition impacted the profitability of the bus companies.

Since he was named in August 2024, the new director of Intrant, Milton Morrison had carried out a crackdown on illegal motorcycle taxi stops. A press release from Intrant explains that within a month of assuming his position, Morrison oversaw the dismantling of 20 illegal motorcycle stops at intersections along major avenues, including Winston Churchill, 27 de Febrero, José Contreras, Heriberto Núñez, Gustavo Mejía Ricart, Núñez de Cáceres, and Luperón.

The transport agency says it is working with the Land Traffic Safety Agency (Digesett) to enforce the ban. Intrant and Digesett are conducting joint operations to enforce the ban, issuing fines and penalties to violators in accordance with Intrant Law 63-17 on Mobility, Land Transport, Transit, and Road Safety.

Intrant executive director Milton Morrison urged all drivers to respect traffic signals and adhere to the provisions of Intrant Law 63-17. He emphasized that human error is a primary cause of traffic accidents. Morrison specifically called on motorcyclists to obey traffic signs, yield to pedestrians, and always wear helmets.

A press release on the ban says that to foster cooperation, Morrison has met with representatives from various motorcycle associations and federations, including Fenamoto, Cordinamoto, and Concemoto, to discuss strategies for improving road safety and transportation efficiency.
