Northeast Forum: Focus on education, health, agriculture, and tourism

The Northeast Forum, hosted by Listín Diario held on Tuesday, 10 September 2024 in San Francisco de Macorís (Duarte province) brought together experts to discuss pressing challenges and opportunities for development in the region’s four provinces: Samaná (Samaná city, Las Terrenas, Las Galeras), María Trinidad Sánchez (Nagua), Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), and Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís).

The forum, held at the at the Universidad Católica Nordestana (UCNE) Regional auditorium, aimed to foster consensus and find solutions to the region’s challenges. Panelists underscored the need for a comprehensive development plan that prioritizes social justice, environmental sustainability, and human dignity.

Panelists, including ecologists, administrators, and community leaders, presented a wide range of proposals to address issues such as education, healthcare, agriculture, sports, and tourism. They emphasized the need for a more sustainable and inclusive approach to development. Hundreds from around the country attended the call to be present for the region and the attendance was a roll call of the people who care for the region.

Wilfredo D. Benjamin Kelly, an environmentalist from Samaná, called for a shift in strategy, urging for greater citizen involvement in decision-making processes. He stressed the importance of addressing basic services like water, education, and healthcare, while also improving emergency infrastructure.

Alixandro Germosén Concepción, representing María Trinidad Sánchez, proposed the creation of a municipal consortium to coordinate efforts and develop effective strategies for the province. He also highlighted the potential for agribusiness, ecotourism, and fisheries.

Linabel González Duarte from Hermanas Mirabal focused on improving education and healthcare services, emphasizing the need for continuous teacher training and inclusive education. She also advocated for the creation of childcare centers to support working women.

Ramón Antigua of Duarte province stressed the importance of strategic planning and investment, particularly in agriculture, ecotourism, and environmental conservation. He called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors.
