President Luis Abinader traveled to New York City with First Lady Raquel Arbaje and several cabinet members to participate in the 79th United Nations General Assembly and related events.
Abinader is scheduled to speak on Monday, 23 September 2024 during a panel on Global Economic Politics at 9am at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel.
At 2:20pm, he will participate in a USAID-organized event on A Future without Lead at Unicef House.
At 3pm he will speak at the Summit of the Future in the General Assembly of the United Nations, ahead of UN General Assembly High-Level Week. The Summit of the Future seeks to forge new consensus around how our international system can evolve to better meet the needs of current and future generations.
Abinader is expected to focus on the ongoing crisis in Haiti, a recurrent topic in his previous UN appearances. Other issues on the agenda will include drug enforcement, crime prevention, disarmament, and the global fight against terrorism in all its forms.
The United States government, that has financed the initial Multinational Security Mission in Haiti announced that country will be insisting the UN take a more active role in funding the restoring of security in Haiti.
Abinader’s participation in the UN Assembly comes at a time when the cash is not happening to fund changes in Haiti, leaving the Dominican Republic, land neighbor to Haiti having to absorb the high cost of the collapse of social services in Haiti. Reports are not that births to Haitians in many provinces is at a 60% Haitians to 40% Dominicans level with many more Haitians giving birth to children than Dominicans.
Meanwhile, other countries in the area have not been successful at incorporating the Haitians. There is the case of the mass migrations to Brazil and Chile that have resulted in an exodus of these to the United States or other countries, after the governments of those countries have not given the new migrants permission to continue their stay in those countries. The United States, likewise, is prompt to deport the Haitian arrivals. Bahamas is well known for its strict policies in accepting and deporting Haitian migration.
