
President Luis Abinader flew to New York City with cabinet members on a private plane to attend the 79th United Nations Assembly. He took advantage of the trip to participate in events with the Dominican community in New York. The events were coordinated by Dominican ambassador Sonia Guzman and newlyt named New York consul general Jesus (Chu) Vasquez.
On Sunday, 22 September 2024, Abinader held several meetings with leaders of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and the Dominican community in New York, including meetings with Dominican-American legislator Adriano Espaillat and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
On the same day in New York, President Luis Abinader hosted a recognition ceremony for 21 outstanding Dominicans in the United States, honoring their contributions to the Dominican community across various fields and reinforcing national pride.
The President also presided over the global premiere of the Dominican animated historical series “Los Trinitarios” and announced the upcoming launch of RTVD Internacional, “La señal de la Patria.” He noted that the goal for Channel 4 is to become a platform that engages all sectors of society, promoting Dominican values, markets, tourism, and the diaspora. “Dominicans, we are proud of you representing our homeland with dignity,” he stated, assuring support from the government for Radio Televisión Dominicana to amplify the voices of Dominicans abroad. The event was held at the Juan Pablo Duarte School in Washington Heights.
The animated series “Los Trinitarios,” utilizing animation techniques akin to those used in “Avatar,” is designed to serve as an educational platform. “I believe education should move in this direction, making history more engaging for children,” said RTVD Director Iván Ruiz. The series recounts the pivotal events surrounding the night of February 27, 1844, which were crucial to the Dominican Republic’s sovereignty and independence.
During his visit, President Abinader, along with Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez and Index Executive Director Carlos de la Mota, honored 21 exemplary Dominicans for their significant contributions to their communities in the United States. De la Mota reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that expatriates receive the necessary support to thrive and contribute to both their local communities and the Dominican Republic.
The ceremony recognized individuals who have made impactful contributions in areas such as culture, politics, and entrepreneurship, highlighting their leadership and dedication to the Latino community in the United States. Among the honorees were Julissa Álvarez, Fernando Aquino, Yanna M. Henríquez, and many others.
Additionally, the official presentation of the Open Skies Agreement between the Dominican Republic and the United States took place on American soil. In his remarks, President Abinader emphasized that the Open Skies Agreement aims to foster competition among airlines, ultimately leading to lower and fairer airfares.
The Open Skies Agreement aims to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance economic ties between the Dominican Republic and the United States. Congressman Adriano Espaillat remarked that this agreement marks a significant advancement in trade and air transport policy, noting that Washington Heights has been declared a Dominican Cultural Historic District.
Roberto Álvarez highlighted the importance of this agreement for Dominicans, while New York City Mayor Eric Adams affirmed that it will bolster trade, communication, and connectivity.
These initiatives are part of the President’s activities in New York from 22 to 26 September 2024, coinciding with the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the UN Summit of the Future.
