The Customs Agency says new body scanners installed as part of a security-enhancing pilot program at Las Americas International Airport uncovered the contraband of 74 high-end smartphones. The pilot program is being implemented at Las Américas, Punta Cana, Cibao, and Puerto Plata international airports.

Of the seized devices, 32 were found in carry-on luggage, while 42 were concealed on an individual’s legs and abdomen, hidden beneath a girdle.

The new scanners use non-intrusive technology to reveal suspect devices or materials. The body scanners employ thermal imaging to detect foreign objects on passengers without the need for physical searches.

Following the detection, established protocols were immediately activated.
