Constitutional reform on agenda in Congress on 7 October 2024

The National Constitutional Revisory Assembly will study proposed amendments to the 2015 Constitution during its session on Monday, 7 October 2024. The president of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos, who is serving as head of the National Assembly, convened the session last week. The National Constitutional Revisory Assembly gathers the legislators from both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

The ruling PRM party has the majority with 176 to 46 of the opposition in the vote. This means, the ruling party legislators can decide on the amendments.

There are basically five major changes requested by the Abinader administration: A reduction of 20 deputies (from 190 to 170); a new way to choose the Attorney General of the Republic; the inclusion of the chief justice of the Constitutional Tribunal in the Council of Magistrates; the unification of the municipal, congressional, and presidential election into one, single process, and the prohibition of anyone serving more than two presidential terms.
