Fishermen’s Wharf in Pedernales fosters economic development

The Abinader Administration has earmarked the economic development of the Southwest of the Dominican Republic as a top priority, and the construction of cruise ship facilities along with hotels and other tourism-oriented projects are just part of the picture.

The construction of the “Fishermen’s Wharf” at Cabo Rojo is another piece of the plan. The wharf will be able to accommodate the small craft associated with the local fishing population, as well as perhaps some deep-sea fishing boats that visit the area.

The Cabo Rojo area of Pedernales has been home to fishing by the local population for many decades. This is an important economic activity is the economically depressed area of the Dominican Republic. The wharf is part of the dozen or so piers and wharfs that the Dominican Port Authority has announced plans to modernize or construct this year.

The new, RD$35.9-million-peso wharf will be able to handle up to 10 deep-sea fishing craft and as many as 44 smaller fishing boats, like those used by local fishermen.

The new wharf is part of the Pro-Pedernales Trust that has been established by the government to manage and oversee the different aspects of the Public-Private infrastructure investments that are being made in the area.
