Digital services to be taxed

El director de la Dirección General de Impuestos Internos (DGII), Magín Díaz, dijo este lunes que en el primer cuatrimestre del año se recaudaron RD$152,500 millones, por encima de los RD$147, 500 millones que se habían estimado para ese período. The details of how this will be done have not been shared, but news reports say that the government intends to tax digital services such as Netflix, Spotify, Airbnb, and Uber.

Airbnb spokesperson Carlos Muñoz told Diario Libre that the company will not be a collection agent for governments around the world. Airbnb proposes to share the data of its customers with the Tax Agency so that the agency (DGII) can then act accordingly.

In an editorial, Diario Libre points out that minor imports from the United States (under US$200), such as those made via Amazon, are exempt from taxation as per the DR Cafta Treaty signed with the United States. The exemption to the imports that arrive via courier would be canceled as per the new tax proposal.
