Vice President Raquel Peña flags off Dominican team for FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

Vice President Raquel Peña officially launched the Dominican national team ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the first World Cup hosted by FIFA in the Dominican Republic. The event is scheduled to be held 16 October to 3 November 2024.

In a statement from the Presidential Palace, Peña highlighted that hosting the tournament is a testament to the nation’s commitment to the development of women’s soccer and gender equality.

“Being the host of this tournament means our young athletes will have the opportunity to shine on an international stage, showcasing the passion for sports and the indomitable spirit of Dominicans. On behalf of the Dominican people and President Luis Abinader, I am honored to present you with our flag, a symbol of our strength, unity, and identity,” Peña said.

Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz expressed pride in the hosting of the World Cup. “A World Cup, right here in the Dominican Republic—the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is one of our greatest achievements, bringing the world’s attention to our nation,” Cruz stated. He added, “The most important thing is that our children and youth are truly passionate about soccer.”

The tournament is set to kick off on 16 October 2024 with matches in the capital city of Santo Domingo and Santiago, the country’s second-largest city.

Competing teams are the host Dominican Republic, Ecuador, New Zealand, Nigeria, Spain, the United States, North Korea, Colombia, Mexico, Kenya, England, Japan, South Korea, Poland, Brazil, and Zambia.

Also attending the flag presentation event were the players, team coach Betzania Ubrí, and Ana Bonnetti, president of the tournament’s organizing committee. Also present were Carlos Bonilla, Minister of Housing and Buildings; José Deschamps, President of the Dominican Football Federation; and Ulises Rodríguez, Mayor of Santiago.
