FIFA World Cup starts 16 October; New city mural welcomes visitors

Santo Domingo is showing off its largest mural, located along the Caribbean Sea facing wall of the former Hotel Santo Domingo. The mural is the largest in the capital city. It was unveiled in time for FIFA Women’s World Cup that opens 16 October at the Felix Sanchez Stadium in Santo Domingo.

The Mayor’s Office of the National District and the Strategic and Special Projects Agency (Propeep) of the Presidency unveiled the largest mural painted in Santo Domingo on occasion of the celebration of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup taking place in the Dominican Republic from 16 October to 3 November 2024 with the participation of 16 countries.

The mural, located on the wall of the former Santo Domingo Hotel on the capital’s Malecon was created by local artists thanks to a wall donation by Central Romana. The mural measures more than 523 square meters and presents renditions of some of the country’s most emblematic historical monuments, such as the Santo Domingo City Hall, the Obelisk, Plaza de la Bandera, and the Fray Antonio de Montesino Monument, which highlight the cultural identity.

This work of art was created with acrylic paint by talented Dominican visual artists: Johnny Jiménez, Juan Miguel Ruiz, Karina Crousset, Lombardo Valdez, Mino Miranda, Marcos Delgado, Kelvin Clase, Brahya Castillo, Israel Marte, and Frank Peña.

For the occasion, Mayor Carolina Mejía spoke of her city government’s support to young women achieving their dreams. “This mural that we are unveiling will not only beautify our city, but also symbolizes the strength, talent, and determination of the girls and women who have come far in this sport,” expressed the mayor.

Mejía urged continued collaboration to create an environment where every girl and young woman feels inspired to pursue her dreams, to play, to lead, and to shine in any field they choose.

The sporting event is the result of a historic agreement signed between Mayor Carolina Mejía, FIFA, and Fedofútbol, in which it was agreed that Santo Domingo would be the main host city of the championship.

The closing of the mural inauguration event was in charge of the merengue singer Manny Cruz, who energized the attendees with his contagious rhythm. Additionally, those present enjoyed a fireworks display.
