Thirteen Dominican students were awarded full scholarships to study at various Moroccan universities. The scholarship covers tuition, housing, and meals for the duration of the four-to-five-year program at the International University of Rabat. The selected students will pursue degrees in Science and Technology, Architecture, and Law.
The Ministry of Higher Education made the announcement explaining the scholarships are the result of the partnership between the Dominican government and the Moroccan International Alliance.
To supplement the Moroccan government’s contribution, the Dominican government will provide a monthly stipend to assist the students with living expenses.
MESCYT Minister Franklin García Fermín explained that this is the second year of the program, with a highly competitive selection process. Out of nearly 120 applicants, 13 were chosen based on their academic merit. All recipients are graduates of the English Immersion program, as the courses at the Moroccan universities are taught entirely in English.
“The experience has been incredibly positive,” said García Fermín. “The students who have already been there for a year have made significant progress in learning the local language and will also be studying French.”
This initiative allows Dominican students to be part of a select group of 3,000 individuals chosen worldwide by Morocco to pursue their studies. While the Dominican Republic has had diplomatic relations with Morocco since 2011, it was not until October 2022 that the first group of nine Dominican students embarked on their academic journey in the North African country.
The Abinader administration has announced the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education with the Ministry of Education. The minister of Higher Education would be replaced by a vice minister appointed to the Ministry of Education.
