Former Migration Agency official arrested in false documents investigation

A former employee of the Dominican Republic’s Migration Agency was arrested during a raid on a residence in Santo Domingo East on Tuesday, 15 October 2024 as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged clandestine operation to produce fake documents for undocumented foreign nationals, Diario Libre reports.

According to the Public Ministry, the suspect, known only as “Doctor Frías,” allegedly used his previous position at the Migration Agency to recruit undocumented immigrants and offer them falsified Dominican identity documents.

During the raid, authorities seized a variety of documents, including birth certificates, passports, and foreign resident cards, as well as equipment used to create the forgeries.

“Doctor Frías” is accused of violating articles 145, 146, 147, and 148 of the Dominican Penal Code, which address document forgery, as well as the country’s identity card law.

The Public Ministry, in coordination with the Civil Security and the Legal Advisory departments of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), and the Criminal Investigations Department of the National Police (DICRIM), initiated the investigation following a tip-off about the illegal operation.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has pledged to continue monitoring any reports of violations related to the Dominican civil registry.
