Tornado knocks down power poles in the Southwest

Reports have just come in that a powerful tornado tore through provinces in southwestern Dominican Republic on Wednesday, 9 October 2024, downing five power poles and causing widespread outages in San Juan de la Maguana and Elías Piña, according to Edesur Dominicana, the power provider.

The utility company reported that the damaged 69-kilovolt power line has left thousands of residents in San Juan, Las Matas de Farfán, and Elías Piña without electricity. The fallen poles have also blocked several roads, disrupting transportation in the region.

Edesur crews were dispatched to the affected areas to clear debris, repair the damaged power line, and replace the downed poles. The company is working to restore power as quickly as possible.
