Members of Presidential Transition Council divided over stand towards the DR

The Miami Herald reports that the members of the Presidential Transition Council are divided over the hostile stand taken by acting Prime Minister Gary Conille and his appointed Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy regarding the Dominican Republic. Both Conille and Dupuy have taken positions that are vehemently anti-Dominican Republic. Now members of the ruling presidential council request she be fired by Conille. He has refused to do so and stands behind her positions.

The Miami Herald reports that a meeting scheduled for Wednesday was canceled, but that Conille plans to meet with his cabinet and plans to ask it to adopt a resolution condemning the Dominican Republic’s decision to deport up to 10,000 Haitians a week as “xenophobic, racist and discriminatory.”

The Dominican Republic is the country that has contributed the most to Haiti, with billions spent for medical needs, education needs for the Haitian population.

The security crisis in Haiti costs the Dominican Republic billions in security spending. The lack of action in Haiti to revert the present insecurity has resulted in a sustained and increasing Haitian migration across the sporadically checked 391 km border. On market days, Haitians are allowed to enter freely from main gates. No one checks who goes back.

The Miami Herald reporter Jacqueline Charles describes as “delicate” the relations between both countries.

The Miami Herald report states: “Believing Dupuy’s stance toward the Dominican Republic over its mass deportations of Haitians is too harsh, presidential council members on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Garry Conille to fire her, saying they no longer trust her. Council members later approved a resolution to remove Dupuy from her post. Conille has refused the request, leading to a standoff with the Transitional Presidential Council in what has been an uneasy relationship. Council President Leslie Voltaire told Conille the council has the necessary votes and the authority to fire Dupuy. Members also warned they would not participate in meetings of the country’s council of ministers until she is gone, two sources familiar with the discussions told the Miami Herald.”
