The Senate Special Committee tasked with evaluating candidates for the Central Electoral Board (JCE) interviewed the current president of the JCE, Roman Andres Jaquez Liranzo as it continues to listen to applicants for the 2024-2028 term. Jaquez Liranzo and the other four members of the current JCE board are seeking re-election.
During his interview, Jáquez Liranzo emphasized the need to strengthen the JCE to address irregularities in electoral processes, El Caribe reports Jaquez Liranzo pointed out several issues that were not included in the recently passed Electoral Regime Organic Law 20-23, such as the need for stricter campaign spending limits and harsher penalties for political parties that exceed them.
“We proposed that spending limits be accompanied by penalties, as there are no sanctions,” Jáquez Liranzo stated. “We suggested reducing spending limits to make campaigns less economically burdensome, but this was not included. I believe we need to give the JCE more teeth.”
The Central Electoral Board is the government body in charge of organizing the municipal, congressional and presidential elections and the keeping of the civil registry in the Dominican Republic.
