Paying tribute to Federico Henriquez Gratereaux

The journalism and literary community are mourning the passing of 87-year old Federico Henriquez Gratereaux on Wednesday, 16 October 2024. He was the winner of the National Literature Award in 2017.

Gratereaux’s multifaceted career included administrative roles at leading institutions such as Listín Diario, where he served as general manager from 1963 to 1966. He also held executive positions in the Liga de Asociaciones y Préstamos (1976-1978) and served as director of public relations for both the Presidency (1978-1982) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. Additionally, he held the position of Secretary of State without a portfolio.

A notable highlight of his career was his tenure as director general of the newspaper El Siglo from 1977 until its closure in 2002.

Gratereaux’s contributions to Dominican society have been widely recognized. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the National Essay Prize Pedro Henriquez Ureña (1979), the Caonabo de Oro Award (2001), the Cultural Merit Medal from the Ateneo Amante de la Luz (2010) in addition to the 26th National Literature Award (2017), conferred by the Fundación Corripio and the Ministry of Culture.
