A coalition of opposition parties is demanding extraordinary elections be held to choose the new mayor of La Vega. La Vega was left without its mayor who had just been in office since April 2024 when President Luis Abinader named him his Minister of Sports and the deputy mayor resigned.
The new election is unlikely. An amendment was included in the 2024 Constitution that will allow the President to name the missing mayor by presidential decree.
