Rains expected as tropical disturbance approaches

A combination of a trough of low pressure and the remnants of a cold front is bringing widespread rainfall to the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, 30 October 2024. The National Meteorological Institute (Indomet) has issued a weather advisory warning of moderate to heavy rainfall, along with isolated thunderstorms, across much of the country.

Provinces already experiencing rainfall include Puerto Plata, Hermanas Mirabal, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís), Sánchez Ramírez (Cotuí), Monte Plata, Samaná, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macorís, and the Greater Santo Domingo area.

Rains are expected to continue throughout the afternoon and evening, expanding to include Monseñor Nouel (Bonao), La Vega, Santiago de los Caballeros, Santiago Rodríguez, San Juan de la Maguana, Elías Piña, Dajabon, Barahona, Independencia, and Pedernales.

Then on Thursday, the forecast is for strong northeast winds, combined with moisture and instability from the trough, to produce rainfall and thunderstorms, especially along the Atlantic coast. Indomet forecasts intense rainfall, with the potential for thunderstorms and gusty winds across the southeast, northeast, north, Cibao Valley, Central Mountain Range, and border regions.

Indomet urges following the weather given that a tropical disturbance is forecast to develop southwest of the Caribbean Sea over the weekend. While the potential for cyclone formation in the next 24-48 hours is low at 0%, it increases to a marginal 40% within the next seven days.

Popular TV and online weather forecaster Jean Suriel says the cold front to the north will bring refreshing temperatures, a relief from the intense heat of recent months. Chilly is morning temperatures dropping to 21C in the main urban areas.

Gloria Ceballos, the director of the Indomet, alerts people to prepare for another wet November. November in 2022 and 2023 brought intense flooding to urban areas.
