US Eastern Seaboard now one hour behind DR

Travelers to and from the United States need to be aware that the Dominican Republic and the United States no longer share the same time. The United States is now one hour behind the Dominican Republic. The DR is GMT -4:00 and the eastern part of the US, Eastern Standard Time is now GMT-5:00.

That is, when it is 3:49pm in New York, NY, USA, it is 4:49pm in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The explanation is that since the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time in the United States has begun annually on the second Sunday in March and ended on the first Sunday in November. When daylight saving time begins in March, clocks “spring forward” one hour, and when it ends in November, clocks “fall back” one hour.

This means that people lose one hour of sleep in the spring and gain one hour in the fall. The purpose of DST is to make better use of natural daylight during the summer months by moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. This schedule is followed by most US states, although some Native American reservations and Hawaii are exempt.
