Biography of leading Colombian journalist to be presented at Santo Domingo Book Fair

Journalist Jose Rafael Sosa is inviting to the presentation of the 700-page biography on Colombian legendary journalist German Castro Caycedo. The book was written by his daughter, Colombian architect Catalina Castro Blanchet. Castro Caycedo has been described as the greatest journalist in Colombian history.

The presentation is part of the events of the Santo Domingo International Book Fair that opens at the Plaza de la Cultura in the capital city on 7 November 2024. The fair will last through 17 November 2024.

Castro Blanchet is coming for the two presentations of the book, on Saturday, 9 November 2024, one at 4pm at the Orlando Martinez Hall of the Dominican Journalist Association (Colegio Dominicano de Periodistas – CPD) and another at the auditorium of the Museum of Modern Art on the fairgrounds (at 7pm).

Castro Blanchet explains:
“I started working on this project with my French husband 12 years ago. Like me, he learned to know and love Colombia through my father’s stories. I thought it was very important to capture his legacy in a book, as a journalist, as a human being, as a father. His honest and independent work, his love for the country, and his responsible way of practicing are the essence of his professional work for six decades.”

She said that her father was the sensitive human who carried Colombia in his veins, with a great sense of commitment and social responsibility, a being who tackled all issues from all angles, from the country’s war to the deep Colombia, including ecology, state scandals, and the pursuit of peace through his profession.

As reported in El Nacional, Germán Castro Caycedo was a self-taught journalist who never attended a journalism school, relying on reading the great chroniclers in the newspapers El Tiempo and El Espectador. His teachers were Germán Pinzón, Marco Tulio Rodríguez, and the De Castro brothers. He took two semesters of anthropology at the National University and closely supported several Colombian anthropologists throughout his journalistic career.

His television program, Enviado Especial (Special Envoy), featuring in-depth reports and interviews with guerrillas, paramilitaries, military, politicians, drug traffickers, and ordinary people, was on the air for 18 years.
