The members of the Presidential Transition Council in Haiti have named Haitian businessman 52-year old Alix Didier Fils Aime as the new Prime Minister. The decision of the majority of the PTC was published in the official journal Le Moniteur, special issue #57, signed by 8 of the 9 members of the Council including 2 non-voting observer members. The signature of Presidential Advisor Edgard Leblanc Fils does not appear at the bottom of this decree. Edgard Leblanc Fils was the first president appointed by the PTC under whose term former Prime Minister Gary Conille had been appointed. He was recently replaced by Leslie Voltaire on 7 October 2024.
Haiti Libre publishes the background of the new head of government of Haiti describing him as a businessman who has been very involved with the community. He was Chairman of the Board of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Haiti (CCIH) and the West (CCIO) under the government of Michel Martely that ended in 2016. Haiti Libre reports Fils Aime is a founding member of the Haitian Association of Information and Communication Technology Companies (ATIC). He was also a member of the Presidential Commission on Information and Communication Technologies composed of personalities from the business sector and the university whose mandate was to formulate strategic proposals to inspire the action of the state in the long term.
The background mentions he is the owner of dry cleaning stores. Nevertheless, there are few details of what Fils Aime has dedicated himself to in the past 10 years.
The fired Gary Conille presented a letter objecting the legality of his removal.
Reasons cited for the change in the Prime Minister are Conille’s refusal to change cabinet members, including Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy. Dupuy had campaigned internationally calling for historic restitution to Haiti and an end to the deportations from the Dominican Republic.
Fils Aime is appointed at a time when gang leader Barbecue announces “days of terror” and gun shooting has forced once again the closing of the Port-au-Prince international airport to commercial traffic.
