Dominican Football Team takes big step towards Gold Cup

The Dominican men’s football team scored a decisive victory versus Team Dominica to advance in the Concacaf Nations League tournament. The tournament’s Gold Cup trophy is the primary goal for teams in the region.

The DR won handily 6-1 at the Cibao FC Stadium on the campus of the Pontifical Catholic University Mater et Magistra (PUCMM) in Santiago de los Caballeros.

Forwards Dorny Romero and Heinz Morschel each scored twice in the first 65 minutes of the match. As the Dominican team kept up the pressure, Rafael Mata scored in the 67th minute and Erick Japa scored a penalty kick at the 90th minute.

On Tuesday, 19 November 2024, the DR will take on Bermuda for the final step up to the A League of the Concacaf’s League of Nations competition. With a victory or tie against Bermuda, the Dominican team is guaranteed a pass to the Gold Cup competition in 2025, as well as the Concacaf League of Nations 2025 edition. This is a major step up for the emerging national team that has been playing in the lower-level B League.
