The National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held a workshop on Smart Mobility Innovation to explore how technology can be used to transform and streamline passenger transport in Greater Santo Domingo, including a master plan for traffic lights.
The workshop on mobility systems formalized a previously signed agreement between the two institutions.
The event was led by Intrant director Milton Morrison and JICA country representative Sakaguchi Kota. Earlier this year, they signed an agreement that paved the way for the seminar. The workshop took place at the High Technology Laboratory of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), which is also a part of the agreement.
Mobility and transportation experts presented case studies on the effectiveness of mobility systems in other countries. Morrison highlighted the importance of cooperation and the exchange of knowledge on mobility and transportation between the Dominican Republic and Japan.
In his opening remarks, Morrison affirmed that Intrant’s vision is to transform the Dominican transportation system to make it safer, more efficient, accessible, and sustainable. He expressed hope that the knowledge and proposals arising from the meeting would enable the design of a mobility framework.
Morrison told Diario Libre that the Japan transport technicians will carry out a diagnostic of the traffic situation and present recommendations.
