Dominican citizens now need to show IDs to leave the country

It is a common practice to leave the cedula behind when traveling abroad with a Dominican passport. The Migration Agency (DGM) is now requiring outgoing Dominican passengers to show their ID cards (cedulas) to leave the country. This additional measure, implemented in recent weeks, aims to bolster security and prevent identity theft, Diario Libre reports.

While passports remain the primary travel document, the DGM has added the requirement of showing the ID cards as a secondary form of identification. According to a statement released by the agency, both physical and digital copies of the ID are being accepted.

When Diario Libre asked about the specific start date of this new policy, the DGM cited national security concerns and declined to provide a detailed timeline. However, the agency did confirm that the measure is of recent implementation.

“It’s a recently implemented measure,” the DGM stated in a brief response. The agency did not provide a specific reason for the policy change, just the same security concerns.

Despite the new requirement, the DGM reported that no passengers have been denied boarding due to the lack of showing an ID card and that the additional verification process has not caused significant delays.

“No one has been turned away for not having their ID card, and we understand that presenting it does not delay passengers,” the agency stated.

In addition to passports and ID cards, Dominican travelers are required to complete an online E-ticket form and present the generated QR code at the airport. This digital form, which is also required for entry, is mandatory for both citizens and foreign nationals.
