This Friday, 22 November 2024, the Dominican Republic will celebrate National Larimar Day with a series of events in the southwestern community of Bahoruco, La Ciénega municipality, Barahona province. The Ministry of Energy and Mines, along with other government institutions, will host activities to highlight, promote, and elevate the value of the nation’s gemstone.
Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos says there will be a bazaar of larimar jewelry, a panel discussion with miners and artisans, workshops, performances, and recognition awards for those involved in the larimar value chain. The celebration, a symbol of the nation’s identity and cultural heritage, will begin at 10am at the Campo Deportivo on the 17th kilometer of the Coastal Highway in Bahoruco.
During the ceremony, state authorities will recognize and honor the significant contributions of miners, artisans, merchants, and influential figures who have played a crucial role in promoting this semi-precious stone. The Ministry of Energy and Mines will also announce the sector’s achievements under the current administration, reaffirming its commitment to supporting and promoting this unique Dominican gem.
Miguel Méndez, the individual who named the stone “larimar” and was the first artisan to recognize its potential for jewelry and art, will be in attendance.
Larimar, a unique blue and white pectolite variety, is a symbol of the Dominican Republic’s identity and cultural heritage. In 2018, the National Congress declared November 22nd as National Larimar Day and, in 2011, designated it as the country’s national gemstone. This legislation mandates that the ministries of Energy and Mines, Environment, Culture, and Tourism oversee the annual celebration.
