Haitian charged in assault on medics arrested in border area

State prosecutors have charged a Haitian who would have assaulted medics at the Dario Contreras Trauma Hospital on Sunday, 17 November 2024. The video with the assault on the medics showing the Haitian with a knife in hand circulated on social media causing much outrage. Many here complain the massive demand for free medical services by the undocumented Haitians reduces availability for legal residents and Dominicans at public hospitals.

As reported, Wilson Gabriel promptly fled the hospital, yet was identified as part of a group of illegal foreigners detained for processing by the Migration Agency.

The man identified as 28-year old Wilson Gabriel was arrested on Friday, 22 November 2024 by Army officials when attempting to re-enter Dominican Republic through a wooden border area in Arroyo Carrizal, Elias Piña. The army noticed one of the men had a hand injury. His face was covered with mud. Gabriel would explain he had suffered the injury working with a machete in a lot in Santo Domingo East and had sought medical care at the Dario Contreras Hospital.
