President Luis Abinader announced on Sunday, 1 December 2024 that retired members of the Dominican Armed Forces will receive 100% coverage for their health insurance starting 1 January 2025.
During a luncheon at the Ministry of Defense, Abinader expressed his gratitude to the retired military personnel and emphasized that this increased coverage is a matter of justice. “Now, when they need it most, they will have full access to healthcare,” he stated.
The President acknowledged the long-standing disparities in pay and benefits between active-duty and retired military members. He assured the audience that the government is committed to improving the conditions for all members of the armed forces in the years to come.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre explained that this new policy will provide retired military personnel with comprehensive coverage for all medical procedures and medications, with the costs to be borne by the Ministry of Defense. “With this increase in coverage, our retired military personnel will have access to a wider range of healthcare services,” he stated.
The announcement of the expanded coverage will have an impact on demands of other sectors in government for full coverage.
