OPRET announces completion of major stretch of Santo Domingo Metro extension

The Santo Domingo Metro Office (Office for the Reordering of Transportation – OPRET) announced the final joining of the viaduct connecting the extension of the Santo Domingo Metro to Los Alcarrizos, in northern Santo Domingo. The María Montez station tunnel is connected to the 2-C line of the Metro. Concurrently, the installation of tracks for the trains is underway.

With this milestone reached, the civil engineering work is now 95% complete, signaling the project’s entry into its final phase.

The process, described as a complex assembly, marks a significant advancement in the execution of this project, which is under rigorous supervision and auditing by the prestigious firms Epsa-Labco and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), through the Ibero-Mexican company TYPSA. This oversight reinforces confidence in the project’s quality and transparency.

The 6.3-kilometer viaduct has been constructed adhering to strict international quality standards, ensuring its durability and safety.

Current work includes the installation of tracks, electrical poles for the train lines, and lighting systems within the stations. Additionally, drainage systems in the 940-meter tunnel, whose excavation concluded months ago, are nearing completion.

The announcement comes after the contractors removed a faulty concrete connection, as reported in Diario Libre. Opret announced the replacement was at the cost of the contractors. The project had been delayed, but now the issues seem to be resolved.

A construction flaw in a concrete column on the 2-C line of the Santo Domingo Metro, near Avenida Prolongación 27 de Febrero, required its demolition. The Office for Transport Reordering (OPRET) ordered the contractor to dismantle the column after discovering a defect in the concrete pouring process.

On Thursday, 28 November 2024, Diario Libre reporters witnessed crews using a crane to remove the column as workers cut through the reinforcing steel.

The OPRET has emphasized that such incidents can occur in both large and small construction projects and that the contractor will bear the full cost of the repairs. “It’s crucial to highlight that the cost of correcting these issues falls entirely on the responsible contractor, with no additional impact on the project’s budget,” stated the OPRET.

The OPRET says it is committed to ensuring the highest quality of construction for the city’s transportation system.

OPRET Director Rafael Santos Pérez expressed satisfaction with the progress made, highlighting the project’s support from prestigious national and international companies. “This achievement reflects not only the project’s technical advancement but also our commitment to excellence at every stage of construction,” Santos affirmed.

According to OPRET, the extension is slated for inauguration in the second quarter of 2025. It encompasses a 7.3-kilometer stretch and includes the construction of five stations that will become part of the integrated Metro-Cable Car system of Santo Domingo.
