Estrellas take lead in winter baseball

Playing in their newly remodelled Tetelo Vargas Stadium in San Pedro de Macoris, the Estrellas Orientales took the lead of the Dominican Winter Professional Baseball Championship by defeating the Escogido Lions on Wednesday, 4 December 2024.

Ismael Munguía was the undisputed hero of the night as his two-run RBI single in the seventh inning propelled the Estrellas Orientales to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Leones del Escogido, securing the top spot in the Lidom standings.

The win lifted the Estrellas to a 21-15 record, giving them a half-game advantage over the second-place Tigres del Licey (20-15), whose game against the Gigantes del Cibao was postponed due to rain. The Leones, who have now lost three consecutive games, dropped to third place with a 20-16 mark.

Munguía’s clutch hit in the seventh inning proved to be the difference maker, as he drove in two runs to extend the Estrellas’ lead. The Green Team’s starting pitcher, Andy Otero, was forced to leave the game early after being hit by a pitch in the second inning. However, Abdiel Mendoza (2-0) picked up the win in relief, while Neftalí Feliz earned his seventh save of the season.

The Estrellas will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Gigantes del Cibao at Estadio Tetelo Vargas on Thursday, 5 December.

The best four teams of the regular season that ends on 23 December make the second round in the tournament to decide the playoff teams.
