Ministry of Public Works: 45% of Isabel Aguiar tunnel construction to be completed by December 2025

The Avenida Isabel Aguiar traffic flow project will be 45% completed by December 2025, Public Works Minister Deligne Ascención told reporters during a recent inspection visit to the site. The works are being built with funds allocated by an advanced payment for the renegotiation of the Las Americas International Airport concession.

Ascención explained that the first phase of the project is slated for completion in the second half of 2025, with the second phase expected to wrap up by mid-2026.

The project involves the construction of a 1.02-kilometer tunnel at Plaza de la Bandera, featuring two lanes in each direction and a width of 3.65 meters per lane.

Additionally, the project will include the rehabilitation of side roads, drainage system, and the installation of new signage and safety barriers.

A grade separation or trench is also being constructed on Avenida Isabel Aguiar to improve traffic flow on Avenida 27 de Febrero, connecting the National District, Santo Domingo West, and the 6 de Noviembre Highway.

Don’t bet on the date. The Ministry of Public Works under Ascención has been notably off target when announcing construction finish dates. For instance, the Km 9 roadworks have many times been announced these will be finished in six months, with years passing. In May 2024, after many postponements of the finish dates, the Ministry invested heavily in a propaganda campaign to announce the works would be completed in 90 days. The works have yet to be completed at that project.

Meanwhile, in a related story, the Ministry of Public Works promises to finish a government offices parking building in the Centro de los Heroes area.
