Tourism Minister David Collado was in New York City for the opening of the Dominican Republic’s Grand Glass Dome at NYC’s Times Square. The Change the Season event is open to the public from 8 to 15 December 2024.
The bubble is located at Duffy Square, in Broadway, between 45th and 46th streets, in Times Square. It is open through 15 December from 9am to 9pm.
The activities taking place at the dome include culinary tasting of signature Dominican dishes such as sancocho and asopao. Free drinks including morisoñando, and others paired with mango and passion fruit are served to those attending. There are dance performances featuring traditional merengue and bachata rhythms, both recognized as UNESCO cultural treasures. Likewise, master artisans are carrying out live cigar-making demonstrations. A select few will be the fortunate winners of expenses-paid vacations to the Dominican Republic.
During his presentation at the opening, Tourism Minister David Collado announced that the New York area is the main source of tourists to the Dominican Republic, with almost 1.3 million a year. The Times Square site for the promotion was chosen because an estimated 400,000 people walk through Times Square on any day in December.
The numbers of travelers from the New York area are expected to increase when the low-cost carrier Arajet starts flights once the red tape for the recently signed Open Skies Agreement between the US and DR is cleared. The aviation agreement was recently okayed by the Constitutional Court in the DR and is pending congressional approval and presidential enactment.
Collado highlighted that the Times Square event is an open invitation for people to come and enjoy not only the beaches, but also the people, culture and food.
The Ministry of Tourism explains that the NYC activity aims to create an emotional connection with visitors and encourage them to consider the country as their next vacation destination, highlighting its rich and diverse offerings. At the same time, the pop-up serves as a platform to strengthen strategic relationships with tour operators, airlines, and travel agents.
Collado was accompanied by New York Representative Adriano Espaillat during the opening event.
