Flu season: Pediatrician urges prompt medical care

Children and the elderly are once again bearing the brunt of seasonal respiratory illnesses, according to pediatrician Dr. Rosa Acevedo Saladín, president of the Dominican Pediatric Society. In an interview with Diario Libre, Dr. Acevedo Saladín highlighted the increased prevalence of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during colder months of the year — November through March.

“Every year, when the temperature drops, we experience a surge in respiratory illnesses, especially viral infections,” she explained.

Dr. Acevedo Saladín emphasized that both children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to these viruses. “The influenza virus and RSV have become significant problems in recent times, affecting not only young children but also older adults with compromised immune systems. Additionally, Covid-19 continues to impact our population,” she noted.

Common symptoms of these respiratory illnesses include cough, runny nose, fatigue, and loss of appetite. While many cases can be managed at home, Dr. Acevedo Saladín stressed the importance of seeking medical attention for prompt diagnosis and treatment. “Early diagnosis allows for the prescription of specific antiviral medications, such as those for influenza, which can significantly alter the course of the disease,” she said.

To prevent the spread of these illnesses, Dr. Acevedo Saladín urged individuals to practice good hygiene, avoid crowded places, and stay up-to-date on vaccinations. She particularly emphasized the importance of the influenza vaccine, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions.

“The influenza vaccine is available free of charge at our public health centers for high-risk populations. Children under two years old, adults over 65, and those with chronic conditions should receive two doses, spaced one month apart,” she recommended.
