According to data released by the National Health Service (SNS), Haitian women accounted for an average of 35.7% of all births in Dominican public health facilities between January and November 2024. The numbers reflect the collapse of the health system in Haiti. There are many Dominican public hospitals where the number of births to Haitian mothers is upwards of 60%.
The stats are evidence of the large number of Haitian women who travel to the Dominican Republic to give birth for free at public hospitals. They also reflect the large number of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic.
The SNS reported a total of 29,710 births to Haitian mothers during this period, out of a total of 83,186 births. This trend is consistent with the previous year, where Haitian mothers represented 35.7% of all births.
A breakdown of the data reveals that the percentage of births to Haitian mothers fluctuated slightly from month to month, ranging from a low of 31.6% in March to a high of 39% in September.
