Deputy Minister Roberto Herrera says works are underway to start a program to repave the Coral Highway. He responded to criticism made in an editorial in Diario Libre on 10 December 2024.
Herrera, who is in charge of supervising public works at the Ministry, said there are plans for repairs to take place from La Romana to Punta Cana with the application of a thinner asphalt that guarantees good road maintenance and extends the life of the asphalt.
“We are embracing the most modern, efficient, and optimal technology because that is optimization, that is, doing the best that can be done while spending the least possible,” said Herrera, as reported in Diario Libre. He maintained that they are not only working on the modernization of the Duarte Highway, which is the main, central road of the country, but also on projects like the Eastern Highway that were carried out by other governments.
The intervention on the entire highway will impact about 60 kilometers. Additionally, in the most critical points, along 12 kilometers, the existing asphalt will be replaced with new.
On the other hand, Johan Sabino, director of paving for the Ministry of Public Works, reported that the technique being used will allow the asphalt to remain in good condition for five years or more.
“In about 48 kilometers we will be applying micro-paving; this process is a special thin layer of asphalt that is applied over the existing surface. This process consists of applying a mixture of asphalt, additives, and fine aggregates, which adheres to the existing pavement through the action of an asphalt emulsion, thus protecting the existing asphalt.”
