President Abinader is back after 5 days in Qatar

President Luis Abinader returned on Tuesday, 10 December 2024 to Santo Domingo after five days abroad to attend the Doha World Forum and meet with business people in Qatar, the Presidency reports.

During his visit, the President held a meeting with Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad. President Abinader met with the Emir at the Royal Palace. As reported, The Emir expressed Qatar’s interest in increasing investments in the Dominican Republic, highlighting the country’s rapid economic growth, the highest in Latin America.

One of the key points of conversation was the potential establishment of a direct flight from Qatar Airways to the Dominican Republic. Additionally, President Abinader visited Hamad International Airport, which has been awarded the title of the world’s best airport terminal.

Abinader also participated in the World Doha Forum, which took place on 7 and 8 December. In his speech, the President Abinader emphasized the importance of global cooperation in the Dominican Republic’s development, noting that the country’s political and social stability, along with the synergy between the public and private sectors, has been critical to its success.

Throughout his visit, the Dominican leader held several high-level meetings. On Saturday, he met with Badr Mohammed Al Meer, CEO of Qatar Airways, and with Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. He also held discussions with Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Thani, CEO of IRTH Capital, and with S.E. Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohammed Al Khater, Qatar’s Minister of Education.

On Sunday, Abinader met with Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al-Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, and S.E. Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, the country’s Minister of Tourism. He also had meetings with Qatar’s Minister of Health, Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud, and Minister of Transport, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Thani.

Additional talks took place with prominent figures, including Nasser Matar AlKawari, CEO of Katara Hospitality, Mohammed Saif Al-Sowaidi, director general of the Qatar Investment Authority, and Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Defense.

During his visit, President Abinader also inaugurated a bust of Juan Pablo Duarte, the founding father of the Dominican Republic, at the Dominican Embassy in Qatar.

President Abinader was accompanied by José Manuel Vicente, Minister of Finance; Joel Santos, Minister of Energy and Mines; Hugo Rivera, Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs and Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Relations; and Biviana Riveiro, Executive Director of the Center for Export and Investment of the Dominican Republic (ProDominicana).
