Baseball legend Robinson Canó has returned in time to do his best to get the Estrellas Orientales to be one of the playoff teams for the Dominican Professional Winter Baseball Championship. The Estrellas are in first place and needs the least number of games (5) to qualify as one of the top four of six games making the next round robin phase that starts after the Christmas holidays, on 26 December 2024. The regular season ends 23 December.
Canó is best remembered for his participation with the 2013 Dominican team that won the World Baseball Classic. Remember “platano power.” He also has a storied history with the Estrellas Orientales. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the team to their first Lidom championship in over 50 years during the 2018-2019 season.
Cano had been playing in the Mexican league where during the regular season he was named The Most Valuable Player for the regular season of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB). He played for the Diablos Rojos and ended the regular season as lead batter.
The standing as of 10 December 2024 is now Estrellas Orientales (24-16), Tigres del Licey (21-16), Aguilas Cibaeñas (19-18), Leones del Escogido (21-20), Gigantes del Cibao (16-23), Toros del Este (16-24). The top four teams when the regular season closes on 23 December move on to the round-robin phase.
