The low cost carrier Avelo announces the start of flights from Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Hartford, Connecticut to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), the gateway to the leading beach destination in the Caribbean located on the Dominican Republic’s eastern coast.
Seasonal service is scheduled to begin 21 February 2025, with twice weekly service on Fridays and Mondays. Avelo will operate these routes utilizing Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.
The airline announced the flight on 9 December 2024. It is promoting one-way flights starting at US$39.
The airline arrival coincides with advances for the Dominican Republic – United States recently signed new Open Skies agreement that opens the doors for more airlines and more destinations in the United States. The Open Skies agreement is expected to be in effect by February 2025. It is still pending Senate approval and presidential enactment.
US President-elect Donald Trump has named Leah Francis Campos, sister in law to his nominated Secretary of Transport Sean Duffy, to be the new ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
The Avelo flights will be out of Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut. This will be the first non-stop flight from Connecticut to the Dominican Republic.
Avelo also flies to Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ), Cancun, Mexico (CUN), San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) in the Caribbean area.
Upon announcing the flight, Avelo Airlines founder and CEO Andrew Levy said: “We love Connecticut and are excited to continue expanding our presence here with these five new exclusive destinations. With 39 route choices, Avelo offers Connecticut travelers more choice, affordability and convenience than any other airline operating in the state. And when you couple that with our industry-leading reliability, it doesn’t surprise us that nearly three million customers have entrusted Avelo with their air travel since we took flight here three years ago. Avelo’s purpose is to Inspire travel, and we are very optimistic about the opportunities ahead of us to make air travel easier, more affordable and more dependable for people across Connecticut.”
Since taking flight on 28 April 2021, Avelo has flown more than six million customers on over 46,000 flights. Today Avelo serves 54 cities spanning 24 states and Puerto Rico in the United States as well as the three international destinations: Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
In a press release, the airline highlights that Avelo has unlocked a new era of convenience, choice, and competition by flying unserved routes to primarily underserved communities across the country. Most Avelo routes have at least one small, easy-to-use airport. This makes traveling with Avelo a smoother, easier and more enjoyable experience than contending with the crowds, congestion and long walks at larger airports.
The airline highlights its industry-leading reliability. Year-to-date, Avelo ranks #1 in on-time performance – with an 85% on-time arrival rate. Avelo also achieved the lowest flight cancellation rate in the industry – canceling 0.5% of its flights between January and October 2024.
Bradley International Airport has direct flights to 40 destinations. The airport is also served by Aer Lingus, Air Canada, American Airlines, Breeze Airways, Delta Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country, and United Airlines.
