For those who might think that a mixologist is some sort of Olympic athlete, it is not so. The dictionary defines a mixologist as someone who is very good a mixing alcoholic beverages or cocktails.
Much more than a barkeep from the old days, a mixologist is a true master of the craft. Like all crafts, there are competitions, and in the world of making cocktails, there is a standout young Dominican lady, Yandery Crispin, who just brought home the first place prize from an international competition in Mexico.
Miss Crispin works at the Westin Puntacana Resort & Club, and her signature cocktail “Remembranza” took the gold in a competition that represented hotels and bars from across the Caribbean and Latin America.
The 2024 Masters of the Craft competition of Marriott International was held at the Westin Santa Fe in Mexico City.
In each of the three categories, contestants were given a mystery ingredient to be included in their special effort. There were three different competitions: Gastronomy, Cocktails, and Desserts. In Cocktails, the secret ingredient was Shiitake mushrooms, and in her Remembranza the inclusion of the exotic mushroom was a major success.
Given only seven minutes to prepare her cocktail, Crispin combined the woody overtones of Scotch whiskey, fresh pineapple juice, the bitter Italian aperitif Aperol and a unique shiitake-flavored syrup to her winning effort.
Visitors to the Punta Cana area can try the drink at the Punta Cana Westin.
