Licey breaks a 67-year old runs record; Ties for second with Águilas

Playing home club, the Licey Tigers set a new record in Dominican Winter Professional Baseball. The victory of 25-3 on Tuesday, 17 December 2024 was celebrated by the thousands of fans that filled the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Ball Park in Santo Domingo.

The Dominican Winter Baseball Record Book (1951-2022-23) notes that the Águilas-Licey game set a new record for combined runs scored in a single game. The previous record of 24 runs was held by a game between the Escogido and Águilas at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo on 7 November 1957.

Emilio Bonifacio and Dave Hensley each tallied four hits in the Tigres del Licey’s 25-3 victory over the Águilas Cibaeñas on Tuesday night at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal, propelling them to a tie for second place in the Dominican Baseball League.

Bonifacio reached 304 runs scored, trailing only César Gerónimo (316) and Manuel Mota (314). Overall, he sits behind Jesús Alou (316).

With this triumph, the Tigres snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Águilas this season, tallying a franchise-record 27 hits in the process. This ties the record set by the Toros against the Estrellas on 12 December 2008, and is just three shy of the all-time high of 30 hits by the Águilas against the Estrellas on 16 January 1982.

Radhames Liz faced the first 18 batters over 3.2 innings, allowing three hits, four walks, and three strikeouts. Ulises Joaquín (W, 3-0) recorded one out in the fourth inning with a strikeout. Cuban pitcher Brian Torres-Pérez (L, 4-3) surrendered four hits and five runs, four earned, to five batters.

For the Tigres, David Hensley went 5-for-4 with four runs scored, two doubles, and three RBIs. Emilio Bonifacio also went 5-for-4 with four runs scored. Sergio Alcántara, Jorge Alfaro, Dawel Lugo, Robel García, Miguel Andújar, Luis Barrera, Arístides Aquino, Yamel Encarnación, Francisco Mejía, and Michael de León all contributed significantly to the offensive outburst.

For the Águilas, JC Escarra, Anthony García, and Yefry Pérez had multiple hits.

On Wednesday, 18 December, the Toros face the Estrellas, the Gigantes take on the Águilas, and the Escogido plays the Licey, all at 7:30 pm.

The Estrellas Orientales lead the standings with a record of 27-18, followed by the Águilas Cibaeñas (24-20), Tigres del Licey (24-19), Leones del Escogido (21-24), Gigantes del Cibao (20-24), and Toros del Este (17-28).

The championship regular season closes on 23 December 2024. The top four teams continue to the round-robin phase to choose the playoff teams.
