The Dominican tradition is for family and friends to gather on the evening of the 24th of December. Suckling pork, rice with guandules, and potato salad (Ensalada Rusa) are part of the tradition, but since many activities are held before Christmas, many homekeepers may decide to vary the menu for Christmas Eve. There is no fixed rule.

Gifts are distributed that evening or exchanged at home on the 25th.

People driving to and from Christmas venues are advised to be especially on the defensive, as there may be more than too many people on the road with more than their quota of alcohol.

Traffic after the 25th drops in the big cities, as many people head for vacation lands and to visit family and friends in the provinces.

On Christmas Day most businesses are closed. Ikea announces they will close on 25 December and 1 January. But many businesses will remain open to cater to their customers, especially the mega stores.

Overall, these are good days to go shopping because school is off and many businesses send their employees off for the holidays, too.

Listin Diario recalls how the Dominican Republic is a Christmas vacation choice popular with the rich and famous. Keep alert and you may find yourself walking by an Oscar-winning actor or actress on the beach.

Merry Christmas!
